The issue of abrogation of verses and codices of the Qur’an compiled by Companions are factors that have contributed to the elimination of the role of the Prophet (s) in compilation of the Qur’an. Issues such as Naskh al- tilawa wa al – Hukm, Naskh al- tilawa dun al – Hukm and variations in the Companions’ recitations of the Qur’an are false accounts. He maintains that these are fabrications of jurists, used as evidence to support their juristic decrees using the Qur’an where there was no evidence for them in the present Qur’anic text. Had the holy Prophet (s) compiled the verses of the Qur’an in the form of a book, the aforementioned jurists would not have been able to talk about the existence of various recitations in the codices of the Qur’an compiled by the Companions and elimination of verses from the present Qur’an in the form of the two types of abrogation mentioned above. They had no choice but to eliminate the role of the Prophet (s) in the compilation of the Qur’an, postulating that the Qur’an was compiled after his demise. Although there are positive points in Burton’s theory, it suffers from certain fatal flaws. جان برتن، قرآن‌پژوه انگلیسی معتقد است که: <br />قرآنی که امروزه در دستان ماست، در عصر پیامبر(ص) و توسط آن حضرت گردآوری شده است. مسئلة نسخ و مصاحف صحابه، علل حذف نقش پیامبر(ص) از عرصة جمع‌آوری قرآن هستند. موضوعات نسخ تلاوت و حکم، نسخ تلاوت و بقای حکم و اختلاف قرائات مصاحف صحابه فاقد واقعیت خارجی بوده و ساختة اذهان فقیهانی است که در مناظرات خود با دیگر فقیهان، سعی کردند با تمسک به آنها آن دسته از احکام فقهی خود را که مستند آنها در نصوص مصحف فعلی وجود نداشت، مستند به قرآن نمایند. اگر پیامبر اسلام(ص) ، آیات قرآنی را در قالب مصحفی گردآوری کرده باشد، دیگر، فقیهان مذکور نمی‌توانستند سخن از اختلاف قرائات مصاحف صحابه و حذف نصوصی از مصحف فعلی در قالب دو شکل نسخ تلاوت به میان آورند. آنان چارة کار را در آن دیدند که با جعل روایاتی، نقش پیامبر(ص) را از عرصة جمع‌آوری قرآن حذف کنند و گردآوری آن را به دوران پس از حیات ایشان منتقل کنند. علی‌رغم نکات مثبتی که در نظریة برتن وجود دارد، نقدهای اساسی نیز بر برخی از ارکان نظریه او وارد است https://qhs.isu.ac.ir/article_975_92977ae4d2ba21425a59afb269c2a14e.pdf
