Abstract

“Tabākī” is one of the recommended actions by Islam in various situations such as praying, recitation of the Qur'an, and mourning for Imam Husain(A.S). Considering the advice of ʾahl al-Bayt(A.S) regarding “Tabākī” and the widespread discussions around this term, clarifying the exact meaning of this word and protecting it from spiritual distortion is an important step in outlining Islamic etiquette and promoting the proper culture of mourning. The common understanding of “Tabākī” refers to the pretense of crying; Alongside this, a second meaning "takalluf bukāʾ" has also been presented. A deeper examination of this meaning reveals that it implies the intention and pushing oneself to cry along with enduring hardship and difficulty. This article provides a historical report of both meanings using a descriptive-analytical approach from the linguistic perspective. Subsequently, by assessing the credibility of reports and directly correlating the meanings with the usages of the term “Tabākī” in Hadith, the first meaning is deemed incorrect, whereas "takalluf bukāʾ" is accepted as valid. Considering this meaning negates the suspicion of allowing hypocrisy(Rīyāʾ). Factors such as the attachment to the meaning of "Taẓāhur", as one of the dominant interpretations in "Tafāʿul", the position of scholars who believe in the meaning of pretense, as well as the influence of incorrect translations from Fasic Arabic, have led to the misunderstanding and spread of the wrong connotation of pretense from "Tabākī”.
