The Scholarly Character of Shaykh Shaltut and His Exegetical Approch
Abstract
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim written by Shaykh Mahmud Shaltut is among the commentaries creating a link between traditional and modern commentaries. The author not only has dealt with traditional interpretive discussions like earlier scholars, but has taken contemporary needs and spatio– tempordal requirements into consideration.
Written in a masterly literary prose, this commentary of the Islamic 14th century aims at the principal purposes or intents of each Sura insteal of explaining individual verses in Suras. Futhermore, it seeks to pave the way for proximity of Muslim schools of thought and Islamic unity. Being cautious not to confuse scientific hypotheses and theories with Quranic interpretation, and criticizing such an approach are among other prominent features of the commentary. The present article is an attempt to introduc the contemporary commentary and its interpretive approach.
